It is located at the top of a hill where, according to Muslim sources, a Phoenician lighthouse had been built; for that reason, the Muslims called it the "Light house Hill", or Yabal-Faruk, from where it got its present name. The castle was built in the first half of the 14th century by Yusuf I, caliph of Granada; in 1487, it was conquered by the Catholic Kings, who then used it to hold the defeated. It was destroyed by the French army before abandoning it in 1812, and it remained a ruin up to the present day; part of the castle was transformed into the Parador de Gibralfaro. Opening hours: 9 am to 6 pm in winter; to 8 pm in summer
