This weekend sees the beginning of the season

The perfect venue for the opening round of the 2005 MotoGP season with a massive following of fans making their annual pilgrimage to the 4.423 kms circuit in Southern Spain. The Jerez circuit has been the scene of some superb races in front of enormous crowds and this year should be no exception, especially if the rain that fell last year, stays away.
2005 YZR-M1 Set-up Report For some time Jerez, has signified the beginning of the European leg of the MotoGP World Championship, but for 2005 it is the first leg of the 17 round season. It's fitting then that Jerez is the circuit which traditionally pulls in the largest crowd, well over 200,000 last year during the three day event. It's due to the Spanish passion for motorcycle racing, but also the circuit's reputation for providing hard and close racing.

Australian Wayne Gardner won the first grand prix to be held on the brand new circuit in 1987. Jerez has staged grands prix motorcycle racing ever since, hosting the Spanish, Portuguese (1988) grands prix. Jerez has also staged seven Formula One car races, the last on in 1997. The first Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix was held in 1951 on the Montjuich Park road circuit in Barcelona. The Jarama circuit on the outskirts of Madrid is the only other circuit to stage the event. The atmosphere and excitement generated by the crowd at Jerez is one of the highlights of the season. This year should be even better and certainly noisier with the teams and riders clashing for the first time in 2005.
